ALAC Redevelopment

The Albany Leisure and Aquatic Centre Redevelopment Project involved the construction of additions to the existing centre, including:

  • A new leisure pool with 550sqm of water space including beach entry, four 25m lanes, river ride, in-pool spa, beach geysers, and various other water features
  • 50m water slide with new splash pool
  • Tots pool with pool toys
  • Adult spa and steam room
  • Cafe with pool-side and sports lounge eating areas
  • New poolside change rooms including family friendly change facilities
  • New entrance lobby, reception desk, apparel shop and administration area 
  • Aerobics hall and function room, gymnasium and community meeting room
  • New child minding facilities
  • New staff common room and change facilities
  • A community and sporting club resource centre including shared office, computing and filing space
  • Refurbishment of the existing sport hall administration area
  • Lining of the sport hall with perforated Colorbond
  • Repainting and general refurbishment of sport hall

Efficient design

Specialist aquatic and leisure centre planners Donovan Payne Architects completed innovative designs for the centre, combining the existing facilities with the creation of new amenities aimed at encouraging greater participation from a broader cross-section of the community. 

The building materials and design incorporate a high degree of energy efficiency including passive solar design and use of renewable resources.

Funding support

Thanks is given to the following organisations for generous funding support of the project:

     Department of Sport and Recreation: $1,500,000

     Lotterywest: $328,000

     Government of Western Australia: $500,000

     Commonwealth Government Regional Partnerships Program: $634,000

Wauters Enterprises, one of the Great Southern's leading commercial construction companies, started construction on the project in early January 2007. The new facilities opened in May 2008.

 

Albany's upgraded leisure centre opened to wide acclaim in May 2008.
