Scholarships and education awards

The City of Albany supports a number of local educational institutions and their students through the provision of educational scholarships and awards. These scholarships and awards are administered by the educational institutions, which include Great Southern TAFE and University of WA Albany Centre.

Harmony Week

March 21 is the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, marking the anniversary of the Sharpeville massacre, which took place on this day in 1960.

Harmony Week is celebrated each year in the week leading up to 21 March and is designed to raise awareness of multiculturalism, promote greater understanding in our community and communicate the message of saying no to racism and discrimination.

Harmony Day was first celebrated in Australia in 1999 and is a time when Australians come together to reflect on and celebrate the many cultures that make up our country, and show an appreciation of Australia's diversity.

The City of Albany participates in Harmony Week through community-based programs, projects and activities designed to bring the diverse cultures of our community together.

Volunteering

Volunteers are the lifeblood of the Albany community and contribute countless hours of unpaid work in a wide range of agencies and organisations. There are also many organisations, clubs and associations in Albany that are made up of volunteers. Many of these groups own, manage or operate community facilities and others are established to promote a wide range of specific interests. The Albany and Regional Volunteer Service was established to help these groups to recruit, train and better manage volunteers throughout the community.

Premier’s Australia Day Active Citizenship Awards

The Australia Day awards promote national pride, community responsibility and participation. The Australia Day Council of WA provides three awards each year for presentation in each local government area in the categories of:

  • A person 25 years or older
  • A person under the age of 25 years
  • A community group or event

The awards aim to recognise individuals and groups making a significant contribution to the community, demonstrating leadership on a community issue resulting in the enhancement of community life, undertaking a significant initiative which has brought about positive change and added value to community life, or inspiring qualities as a role model for the community.

Nominations for the awards open in October and close on the fourth Friday in November.

The awards are announced at the City's Australia Day Family Fun Day held on January 26 each year.

Application forms are available from the City of Albany office at 102 North Road Albany, or the Australia Day Council of WA via the link below.
