Seniors Healthy Heart Open Day!

The City's Seniors Healthy Heart Open Day on May 9 was a raging success, with over 70 seniors taking the opportunity to have a free health check, cholesterol test, and learn how to improve heart health.

Due to the success of this event, the Community Development team is looking at similar events in the near future, so watch this space for more opportunities.

Positive ageing in Albany

Albany has plenty to offer seniors. The mild climate, scenic beauty and ready availability of services and activities have created an ideal setting for opportunities and fun in our community.

With as many seniors as there are people under the age of 20, the City of Albany is committed to providing an inclusive age friendly community focusing on positive and active ageing. It is anticipated that the number of people in Albany over 65 years will grow from 22 per cent of the population (June 2002) to 33 per cent by 2020.

Seniors Committee 2012

The newly formed Seniors Committee met for the first time in early 2012. The Committee meets quarterly, with the next meeting scheduled for 20 June 2013.

The group meets quarterly for members to discuss and plan projects relevant to seniors in the Albany commmunity.

 The Committee comprises of five community representativces:

  • Cr, Don Dufty, Chair
  • Cr Alan Hortin
  • Ms Middy Dumper
  • Mr Michael Calton
  • Ms Esme Justins
  • Mr Ken Ewers-Verge
  • Mr John Slattery

The Committee's terms of reference are as follows:

  • This Committee is responsible for making recommendations to Council relating to Seniors and providing an avenue of communication and consultation between Council and the Seniors community;
  • Encourage the promotion and recognition of the contribution of Seniors to the Albany community;
  • Identify Seniors needs, opportunities, rights and responsibilities;
  • Encourage enhanced community participation of Seniors;
  • Promote collaboration, relationship building and partnerships between Seniors and non-Seniors community groups and organisations;
  • Identify initiatives to improve the quality of life for current and future Seniors residents and ratepayers;
  • Deal with matters referred to it by Council from time to time; and
  • Deal with matters referred to it by Seniors and other sections of the community.

An initiative of the Seniors Advisory Committee, the Seniors Services Directory contains information on a wide range of services and service providers that may be of interest to seniors. You can download an electronic copy here or contact the City of Albany for a free copy.

Senior Services Guide

A new community service website that makes it easy to find aged care services to help mature Australians remain happy and healthy in their new homes. The online directory offers information of local free, subsidised and commercial services in a range of categories.

Celebration of Centenarians

The stories they can tell and the things they've seen! As a tribute to healthy ageing and longevity, the City celebrates community members who reach the age of 100 by planting a tree in one of the City's many parks.

Liveable Housing Guidelines

The City of Albany adopted the Liveable Housing Guidelines on 16 October 2012. These guidelines are an initiative of the Council's Seniors Committee.  The Seniors Committee developed these guidelines to assist home owners on considering these issues at the time of purchase or renovation of a property.
