Future of the community

Albany's young people are a diverse but integral part of the local community, deeply involved in the adventure and struggle of defining themselves in a complex society.

Tomorrow's leaders are a key priority in the City of Albany's Community Development Strategy. Any young person or community member with issues, concerns or input is encouraged to contact the community development officer for youth by E-mail or on (08) 9841 9294.

Youth Advisory Council: Make a difference

The Albany Youth Advisory Council, or the Albany YAC, is a group of young people who are interested in the community and want to make life easier and more fun for Albany youth.

The YAC describe themselves as the voice of Albany youth, and can make things happen - all ages music events, youth art projects and many more activities.

Being an active member of the Albany YAC will help you develop skills in:

  • Decision making
  • Working in a team
  • Event planning and management
  • Grant application writing and fundraising
  • Problem solving

The YAC meets fortnightly to discuss youth issues and to plan projects and youth-focused events. If you want to make a difference and see more fun events for youth in Albany, then please contact the City of Albany's community development officer for youth and find out how you can be involved.

The YAC also has its own radio program broadcasting on on Albany Community Radio 100.9FM live from the Albany youth venue. If you want to be heard, please get in touch with the community development officer for youth for more details.

Next meeting

The next meeting of the Albany Youth Advisory Council is at 5pm on Wednesday 18 November 2009 at City of Albany. Interested young people are welcome to attend. Contact the communtiy development officer for youth by E-mail or phone 9841 9294.

Youth recreation venue

The Albany youth recreation venue, 77 on Sanford, is home to Albany PCYC, Southern Edge Arts and the Albany Youth Advisory Council. The venue is operated by Albany PCYC and caters for basketball, boxing and jurate, as well as housing the YAC Youth Radio Station and sound recording studio.

The venue is also perfectly set up for youth concerts, school balls and other events, with an outdoor entertainment area, café, pool table and plenty of space.

Receive a free SMS to keep informed of upcoming youth events

The City of Albany is proud to announce a new service for young people to keep them informed of upcoming youth events, workshops and other opportunities.

Once registered, young people will receive a free SMS letting them know what is on, with the time, date, place and any costs involved.

From the Brink - A Collection of Ink

If you are aged 16-21 and love working in ink, this is for you!

A series of FREE workshops will be held at the Vancouver Arts Centre during December 2009 focused on the theme of ink.

Work alongside talented artists to develop your skills and produce works that will be displayed in an exhibition in January 2010.

Goddess Program: Fun six-week recreation program for young women

Have you ever wanted to try a new sport but were too nervous or worried about the dollars? Do you want to lose that 'muffin top' and make some new friends?

The Goddess Program is a fun way to have a go at that new sport you always wanted to try, in the comfort of a group of like-minded women.

Warrior Goddess, the final program in the series starts on 20 October and, for $6 a week ($36 total), you will receive a water bottle and Goddess shirt, the chance to try six different activities, transport to and from Albany PCYC, and subsidised creche when activities are held at Albany PCYC.

The Warrior Goddess includes fencing, revolver shooting, paint ball and much more!
