Vancouver Arts Centre

Background

The Vancouver Arts Centre is housed in the former Albany Cottage Hospital, which was built in 1887 to the design of the then Colonial Architect, George Temple Poole. This building remained a hospital until 1962. For the next 10 years it served as a school hostel and holiday accommodation, and then fell into disuse and for eight years lay neglected and prey to vandals.

In 1980, a major refurbishment program began, and the complex was transformed to a vibrant arts and crafts centre.

VAC as a focal point

The Vancouver Arts Centre (VAC) is now the focal point for arts experiences in Albany and is the only facility dedicated to the delivery of an inclusive and diverse arts program for all sectors of the community across all art forms. Its community arts program provides opportunities for full participation in cultural expression for everyone in the community.

Professional development is encouraged and supported through its community arts program, artists in residence programs, exhibitions, partnerships with other organisations, professional mentoring and emerging artists fund.

Coming events

The Vancouver Arts Centre offers an exciting range of exhibitions, concerts, workshops and professional development opportunities each and every month.
