Draft Strategy - Great Southern Arts, Culture and Heritage

City of Albany, Great Southern Development Commission, local governments and creative organisations have engaged with community across the region developing the draft strategy.

The strategy is the first of its kind developed through the Leveraged Creative and Cultural Planning Fund from the Department of Local Government, Sport & Cultural Industries and Department of Primary Industries & Regional Development.

The strategy builds on the Great Southern’s creative and cultural strengths, with recommendations to grow industry capacity and networks, build cultural identity and attract investment for current and future cultural assets and infrastructure.

Residents are invited to review the draft strategy here and leave comments.

Emphasis on diversity

I am pleased to see the emphasis on diversity and on accommodating a wide range of ages and tastes. The focus on aboriginal culture and heritage should not be overdone and needs to be balanced against the many other artistic and cultural interests of today’s GS residents. For instance, I would like to see the recurring event of the Denmark Summer Early Music Workshops mentioned in the Denmark Shire description. Now in their fourth year, they are an established drawcard for classical musicians from across Australia. They come to the Great Southern in the late summer shoulder season and stay for a week or more, contributing to the local economy as they do so.
