2019 Election Candidates

The following people have registered as candidates;

Mayor

WELLINGTON, Dennis

Having been Mayor of the City of Albany for the past eight years, I am very proud of our achievements. The development of the National Anzac Centre, sporting fields, town square and new Visitor Centre to mention a few. Albany is becoming a sought after destination for both local and international tourists due to added attractions including the Field of Light.

Tourism and Agriculture are still an integral part of our economy and continue to be so into the future.  However, there is still more we can achieve, such as the completion of the ring road, Middleton Beach foreshore development, the surf reef, the motorsport park and trails development. Alternative forms of energy, coastal erosion and a changing climate must also be considered. I continue to be passionate about achieving the expansion of our education systems and jobs for our youth.

Keep Albany moving ahead, vote Wellington for Mayor

KNEEBONE, Cheryl Louise

I am a long term resident of Albany for 30 odd years. I have a desire to further promote Albany. My vision for Albany is to see innovation through Eco Tourism and Value adding proposals, enhancing the Great Southern Area ensuring its future prosperity. I worked in secretarial position with Government in Apprenticeships and at Industrial Commission and various other positions plus working overseas.

I strongly believe we can do a great deal more in innovative structures for Albany leading it to be even more successful in the future as well as ensuring that everyday proposals are enacted for the improvement for various wards in the Albany area. I have a strong belief that we should listen more to the electorate ensuring we can provide the essential they need in their wards. I look forward to an energetic and concise assessment of all matters in this field of endeavour.

Vancouver Ward

SHANHUN, John

With your vote I can continue working hard for you, the Vancouver ward and the City of Albany.  I have lived in the Vancouver ward for 35 years and had extensive experience in business ownership and management. HESLOP, Tony

My family has been in this region since the early 1900's.  I have a strong connection and passion for the region.  I left Albany sometime ago to further studies and career pursuits, returning home 5 years ago to raise our family in an environment that my wife and I remembered fondly from our youth.  Originally leaving school to complete a trade I furthered my education in engineering and commerce and worked in senior roles for various large professional and commercial companies.

I am a Chartered Accountant and was the CFO and Company Secretary of an ASX listed company before returning to Albany.  Upon our return we reopened the local  Beaurepaires store as a franchisee, committed to providing local employment and training opportunities to the community.  I am currently the club president of the Albany Cycle Club and have previously been club president and committee member of various clubs and associations.

My vision for the people of Albany is to work towards the basics of more footpaths and fundamental services, keeping rates from rising, and efficient spending of money. I would like to see better transport services to Albany for tourists to improve employment and prosperity in the region. MOIR, Anthony

Albany has a bright future and proud historical past.  Opportunities and challenges face all local governments. Decisive leadership combined with compassion and understanding improves our community's resilience and overall wellbeing.  Over the past four years I have developed good relationships and served on committees and community groups including:

  • Albany Port Community Consultation Committee.
  • Southern Zone WALGA (Western Australia Local Government Association).
  • Natural Resource Management (NRM).
  • Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) Technical Advisory Group.
  • Renewable Energy Working Group.

In the future I would like to see Albany develop a Hydrogen Industry as part of our energy mix.  Improve efficiencies and costs by incorporating Smart Technologies into the city's operations.  Continue to implement the objectives outlined in the Circular Economy and the state's Waste Strategy 2030. These initiatives and others will create new employment and industry opportunities. With your vote I would like to continue the commitment and dedication that I have shown.

DOWLING, Alastair

I would appreciate your vote so that I can work for Yakamia residents in Council.  I am a self employed business owner and can offer my expertise and experience in quality assurance together with a sound knowledge of the responsibilities of elected councillors. I can ask the hard questions.

Continued responsible development in Albany with a Clean and Green environment, encouragement of Tourism and better youth employment opportunities are amongst my priorities.  Yakamia requires more maintenance of infrastructure including roads, cycle paths and footpaths. Council expenditure should be closely monitored. Rate increases should not exceed CPI.  Yes, Albany is an Amazing City : that is why my wife and I choose to live here and why I have enjoyed an active involvement in community organisations.

Please call me should you wish to discuss any issues that you may have in Yakamia.

Mobile: 0412 318 390

THOMSON, Chris

A strong work ethic and background in economic development are what I will bring if elected to represent Yakamia Ward.  Albany should expect top notch representation, but not at the topshelf price currently charged. So, I will oppose pay rises for the mayor and councillors for the duration of my term.  Having led local, state and national industry development programs, I know how to work with people to get economies growing.

As your Yakamia councillor I will push for outreach agreements with UWA and TAFE to increase employment for school leavers so Albany’s keenest minds can stay in the south.  I will champion decentralisation of a state government department from Perth to Albany to give our scenic city an economic boost. Sustainable jobs growth in agriculture, tourism, health and education is what I’ll be about.

Please get in touch if you’d like me to raise any issues on your behalf.
