Albany’s National Anzac Centre has completed part one of a technology and content refresh, redefining the space and creating new ways for visitors to access the moving stories of the Anzac legend.

Since opening in November 2014, the centre has attracted almost 400,000 visitors from across the world that have immersed themselves in Albany’s rich military history.

Now, the experience has been enhanced through a series of updates to ensure the centre continues to remain relevant, exciting and ahead of the technology times.

The National Anzac Centre has replaced its convoy table with a multimedia touch table, converted the convoy room into a theatrette, and ensured the Annexe room can accommodate transitional exhibitions.

The centre also underwent the completion of loan renewals for all artefacts, as well as general painting, minor cosmetic renovations and upgrades to public amenity.

Marking the launch of the new theatrette space will be the screening of Bayonets and Butterflies from WA filmmaker Sam Hobbs, the great-grandson of Lieutenant General Sir Joseph Talbot Hobbs.

The film tells the true story of how Australian troops under the command of Lieutenant General Sir Joseph Talbot Hobbs, rescued French Lepidopterist Eugene Boullet's priceless collection of butterflies.

These butterflies now form the basis of Muséum national d'histoire naturelle, Paris' butterfly collection.

Mayor of Albany Dennis Wellington said the update will provide new and revisiting guests with a fresh take on this important period of local and national history.

“The National Anzac Centre has proven to be an integral part of the sharing and remembering of Australian Anzac history, both on a national and international scale,” he said.

“Through the essential refresh of this facility, the centre will continue to provide an attractive and inclusive experience for all visitors who want to connect with the Anzac story.

“We are honoured to be able to screen this film which shows a different side of our shared history in the updated National Anzac Centre space.”

Bayonets and Butterflies is screening at the National Anzac Centre theatrette from this month for visitors of the centre.
