Albany's second Garage Sale Trail a community success

Published on Tuesday, 22 December 2020 at 12:54:40 PM

Local residents and community groups across Albany turned trash into treasure over the Garage Sale Trail weekend last month, preventing more than 3,500 kilograms of waste from ending up in landfill.

More than 2,780 local sellers and shoppers spent their weekend supporting the responsible disposal of waste over the 21st and 22nd of November in efforts to reduce the number of items destined for landfill and improve sustainability across the City.

This is the second year the City of Albany has taken part in the Garage Sale Trail, seeing a total of $15,158 change hands and an estimated 15,145kg of items reused locally over the weekend.

An overwhelming 75% of residents who participated reported feeling more connected to their community which isn’t surprising after an estimated 2,609 community interactions across Albany over the weekend.

City of Albany Chief Executive Officer Andrew Sharpe said he was pleased with the community’s involvement in the nationwide sustainability initiative.

“It was great to see Albany residents get behind the Garage Sale Trail for a second year and embrace reusing and repurposing over the weekend,” Mr Sharpe said.

“I want to thank our residents and community groups who have shown that the Garage Sale Trail not only helps to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill, but can also help support fundraising efforts for local charities.

“With 2021 being a tough year for some of our residents, it is a good time to remember that buying and selling second-hand items can be not only great for the planet, but for the pocket too.

“The City is proud to support initiatives like the Garage Sale Trail to support and inspire sustainability in our community.”
