Chef and WA Food Ambassador Don Hancey will be visiting Albany as part of the inaugural Maritime Festival to showcase the City’s unique local seafood.

Albany Mayor Dennis Wellington said the event will be a great opportunity to learn more about the local fishing industry while taste-testing some of Albany’s delicious seafood.

“We are delighted that the Southern Seafood Producers of WA and the WA Fishing Industry Council have joined with us to make this event happen,” Mayor Wellington said.

“We are blessed to have some of the world’s most prized seafood right on our doorstep.”

Teaming up with local Chef, Daniel Sharp, Chef Hancey will be at the Albany Boatshed on Friday 16 July from 10am to cook up a storm of local delights, with tastings expected to be available from 11am until 4pm.

Chef Sharp is the son of commercial fisherman Greg Sharp. Having grown up in the region, Chef Sharp is a wealth of knowledge on Albany’s fresh produce.

The pair will work with some of the south’s lesser known, under-utilised species like Albany sardines, WA salmon, tuna and Leeuwin Coast’s akoya oysters in a cooking and tasting demonstration.

The display will feature complimentary tastings of seafood and fish filleting demonstrations.

Professional fishermen and processors will also be present throughout the day to answer questions and share their knowledge.

“This is an excellent opportunity for the community to learn more about our local sustainable commercial fishing industry and how our seafood makes its journey from ocean to plate, cooked by two outstanding chefs,” Mayor Wellington said.

This event is sponsored by the Southern Seafood Producers of WA and the WA Fishing Industry Council.
