City campsites set for upgrade

Cosy Corner and Torbay Inlet campgrounds will be closed to campers over winter as the City progresses planned upgrades that were delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The works were initially slated to begin in May, but will now commence on June 8 with upgrades to include road maintenance, traffic calming, installation of new signage, redefinition of campsite boundaries and revegetation.

City of Albany Manager City Reserves Jacqui Freeman said postponing the works was unfortunate but the right thing to do in order to protect the safety of our community.

“With regional borders opening next week, the people who have been stuck in our region and using the campgrounds because they had nowhere else to stay will be able to move on, and that will allow us to get works underway,” she said.

“These are our most popular campgrounds so we’re really looking forward to commencing these works, bringing them up to standard and consistent with the City of Albany’s Nature-Based Camping Strategy and Action Plan.

Ms Freeman said June was a typically quiet time for camping which would limit the impact to campers.

“It’s a pretty cold time of the year to be camping so we think it’s an ideal time to get these campgrounds ready for residents and visitors to enjoy when the weather starts to warm up again,” she said.

Cosy Corner East will be closed from 8th – 12th June and Torbay Inlet will be closed from 15th – 19th June.
