The City of Albany is supporting Anti-Poverty Week by hosting a range of activities aimed at increasing awareness and supporting those in our community experiencing financial hardship.

Anti-Poverty Week runs from October 11 to 17 and encourages action on the fight against poverty, highlighting the 3 million Australians living below the poverty line.

A number of initiatives will be running on Saturday 17 October including an Op Shop Tour where participants learn about how funds raised in-store help give back to the community.

A Little Free Libraries building workshop will be held at MenShed Albany, to further enable access to reading materials by those who may not be able to access their own.

And a Walking Op Shop Tour will also be hosted by MeetUp Albany for those who want to get their step count up between designated shopping stops.

Residents are also encouraged to donate non-perishable food items to one of the ‘free little pantries’ available at Forrest Personnel and the Rainbow Coast Neighbourhood Centre.

City of Albany Acting Manager Community Development and Engagement Rani Param said Anti-Poverty Week was a great opportunity for the community to work together and consider ways to fight poverty.

“Anti-Poverty Week is a chance to work collectively and focus on positive solutions to empower and end poverty in our community,” Ms Param said.

“More than 13.2 per cent of Australians are living below the poverty line with poverty rates and food relief demands higher in regional communities than in the metro areas.

“Working towards reducing this figure is an important endeavour that we all need to work together to achieve.”

Bookings are essential and can be made by emailing [email protected] or calling 6820 3023.
