Cycle path on hold for Ring Road project

Completion of a shared-use path at Mt Elphinstone to connect Frenchman Bay Road with the CBD will be placed on hold with construction of the long-awaited Albany Ring Road planned to progress next year.

Construction of the Ring Road will result in major changes to the area surrounding Woolstores Place, Frenchman Bay Road, Lower Denmark Road, Princess Royal Drive, Hanrahan Road and Carlisle Street.

The City has already completed a section of the second stage of the Mt Elphinstone pathway to connect Frenchman Bay Road with Grey Street West, and will prioritise the remaining section of pathway once the Ring Road is finished.

City of Albany Executive Director Infrastructure, Development and Environment Paul Camins said the pathway would eventually provide an important link and encourage more people to walk and cycle to the city centre.

“It’s just not feasible to finish the path with the scale of roadworks that need to happen for the Ring Road, we’ll just be wasting resources and money as the new road alignments will cross through large sections of the pathway,” he said.

“We think it’s better to wait and finish the pathway once the new Ring Road is complete.”

The City of Albany will install signage on either side of the railway crossing on Frenchman Bay Road next week to advise the community that the Mt Elphinstone shared path has ended.

“The City is committed to encouraging cycling by ensuring residents have the infrastructure to use their bikes and this project is an important part of that initiative”.
