Drive-way drop-in to thank volunteers

Albany Heritage Park staff will take part in a unique initiative to recognise the Park’s dedicated team of volunteers for National Volunteers Week later this month.

With the Heritage Park closed due to coronavirus, the usual plans for a ‘thank-you’ gathering have been replaced by an innovative driveway drop-in recognition.

Staff will visit many of the 44 volunteers in their driveways to give them a friendly social-distancing wave and deliver a gift of appreciation for the collective 126 hours a week they help out.

From guiding tours to assisting with exhibitions, visitor information, buggy transport and operating gun firing demonstrations, the volunteers are the fabric of the day-to-day running of the historic attraction.

City of Albany Manager Facilities Letitia Stone said the volunteers were full of passion, enthusiasm and knowledge with a generous smile for every visitor.

“It takes a huge amount of time, effort and energy to ensure that Albany’s military history is preserved and promoted to the community, which our volunteers make look easy,” she said.

“We are incredibly grateful to have each of our volunteers at Albany Heritage Park and don’t want to lose our connection to them in this period of uncertainty and isolation.

“So we thought we would spend National Volunteer Week visiting them individually and ensuring they are still celebrated and thanked.”

Driveway drop-in images will be featured online and on the National Anzac Centre and City of Albany social media channels across National Volunteer Week, which runs from May 18 to 24.
