Mentors to connect Albany's seniors

Online shopping, social networking, digital devices and live streaming have become part of our daily life, changing the way we conduct business and connect with friends and family.

The City of Albany with the support of the Australian Government are helping to navigate this space and seeking volunteer digital mentors to help educate older Australians on the importance of being connected.

Be Connected is an initiative aimed at Australians over 50 years old who will benefit from tailored learning activities, training courses, web apps and how-to-videos to advance their skills in the technology space.

The role of the volunteer digital mentors will be to inspire others to have a go and take their first digital steps, offering participants support, encouragement and advice to build their confidence and proficiency in using digital technology and becoming better connected.

City of Albany Manager Precinct Paul Nielsen said the Be Connected digital mentors aim was to demystify the online world and provide easy access, self-paced learning for older people in the community.

“The mentors don’t need to be online or device experts, just willing to share their experiences and show a learner the ropes with patience and encouragement,“ he said.

“We are keen to collaborate with local groups who are interested in becoming network partners to assist our over 50 residents with getting online. Being a network partner with Be Connected opens up opportunities and excellent resources to deliver the program.”

Albany Public Library is hosting a community info session at 11am on Monday, September 16, providing information about the digital mentor program, volunteering as a mentor, and how community organisations can become Be Connected network partners.
