The City of Albany have made the decision to cancel the Lockyer and Spencer Park Community Neighbour Day events due to the escalating restrictions on public gatherings and advice to stop the spread of COVID-19 in Australia. With the COVID-19 situation changing rapidly, the City of Albany are following the advice of the Department of Health in relation to events in Albany. City of Albany Executive Director Community Services Susan Kay said that the decision to cancel both Neighbour Day community events is unfortunate but crucial for public health and safety.“We regret having to cancel these events but feel it’s in the best interests of our community and apologise for any inconvenience this causes to those who were involved,” she said.“Both Lockyer & Spencer Park communities have a high proportion of vulnerable community members and it is their safety that is paramount.”The City of Albany encourages all our community members to reach out to their Neighbours during this time. While face-to-face social interaction is restricted, there are ways we can maintain community connectedness such as online and other virtual options, our phones, and leaving calling or connection cards with a kind message and your phone number for those who are isolated to let them know they can call you for a chat. The Department of Health is leading the national response to COVID-19 and issuing regular updates and guidance. The public can stay up to date via the Department of Health website at www.health.gov.au or HealthyWA website at www.healthywa.wa.gov.au.There is also a page on the City of Albany’s website that links people to the latest information.
