Imagination will run wild when the community comes together for a creative and fun fashion project thathas received a $57,300 grant from the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.
gARmenT is a unique wearable art project created by Albany locals aimed at bringing a diverse range of ages, cultures and makers together to build a creative community event.
Local artists will facilitate workshops with school groups, South Regional TAFE, local community groups and an Indigenous women’s group to produce almost 40 wearable art pieces.
gARmenT will launch with a Gala Fashion Show at the Albany Town Hall followed by a two week exhibition to showcase the project to the community as a whole.
Albany Contemporary Dance will create a bespoke performance for the Gala Fashion Show and talks by the garment creators will feature throughout the exhibition.
Manager Arts & Culture Paul Nielsen said involving the entire community was key to the project.
“We would like to work with our local community to build new networks and grow audiences across Albany,” he said.
“We hope to diversify the regular attendance of our audience and engage them in a creative event that is accessible, inclusive and creates a safe space for our community to interact with”.
Expressions of Interest for artists who wish to be involved in working with community groups and schools, as well as nominations to create a garment for the event are now open until 18 March.
Technical support workers, photographers, videographers and a sculptor for the two week exhibition will also be sought after.
gARmenT will be showcased at the Albany Town Hall in late August.
