Roundabout receives safety trial

Published on Wednesday, 17 June 2020 at 11:54:23 AM

Multiple crashes have occurred in the vicinity of the roundabout in recent years with the latest occurring on April 29, sparking the City to look at protective measures and implement this safety trial.

In consultation with Main Roads, Western Power and Albany Roadwise Safety Committee the City will be making 4 safety enhancements to the location of the road network next month.

White road paint and glass bead reflective coating will be applied to the kerbing on the corner of North and Campbell Roads, and applied to the inner arc of the roundabout itself.

7 red retroreflective raised pavement markers will be placed along Campbell Road to face oncoming traffic and an old driveway on Campbell Road will be closed and replaced with new kerbing.

Permanent solid forms of protection were explored for the area through the consultation period but were considered by all agencies to be a larger hazard for vehicles, posing a greater risk to road users.

City of Albany Executive Director Infrastructure, Development and Environment Paul Camins said that the safety trial is a crucial measure to ensure risk at the intersection is minimised.

“We have worked with agencies to consider a range of safety options that will protect both drivers and pedestrians that use this particular road network and have reached an outcome that aims to save lives” he said.

“Community safety is a top priority for the City so implementing these measures is vital in attempting to reduce the amount of vehicle incidents to road users and innocent bystanders.

“Along with these new safety measures we ask drivers to take extra care when passing through this intersection, abide by the road laws, avoid exceeding the speed limit, don’t drink and drive and be alert at all times”.

Safety trial roadworks will commence in July with the results of the trial to be reviewed on an ongoing basis.
