Three of Albany’s young aviation enthusiasts have been selected to experience a day in the life of an Air Force officer via a partnership between the Royal Australian Air Force and the City of Albany.

The scholarships were on offer to individuals between the age of 12 and 18 to participate in a weekend of Air Force themed activities including flights to Perth with REX and accommodation at the Crown Promenade in Burswood for the weekend.

A day in the life at the Air Force 2021 will provide opportunities for these three young Albany winners to build on their skills within the aviation sector and explore future career opportunities.

The winners include 14-year-old student Luke Roecker from Great Southern Grammar who is currently training for his Recreational Pilot License and volunteers for Albany Mountain Bike Club and Albany Surf Life Saving Club.

Larni-Mae Ramsell is a 16-year-old student from Albany Senior High School who is currently a sergeant in the Albany Police Rangers and coach for UWA’s school holiday sports program.

Also from Albany Senior High School is 13 year-old Heath William Caldwell whose dream job is to be a pilot in the Air Force and who has recently had his first flying lesson.

Albany Mayor Dennis Wellington said all winners are incredibly passionate and deserving of the scholarship.

“A day in the life at the Air Force 2021 will give these three local youths the opportunity to follow their dreams and gain some valuable career development and experience,” he said.

“It is an honour to be able to partner with the Royal Australian Air Force on such a unique and special collaboration aimed at supporting our young people to reach new heights in their careers.

“All of our three winners have shown that aviation and the defence force is a path they are passionate to pursue and we wish them all the best for their weekend away with the Royal Australian Air Force.”

Applications were judged by a panel of representatives from the RAAF and City of Albany who looked for students demonstrating their contribution to community, personal growth and academic merit.
