Winter road safety priority

With winter just around the corner, residents are encouraged to ensure that safety of themselves and others is a priority when they head out onto the roads.

The past two days has seen notoriously nasty weather across the state and in the Great Southern, heightening the importance of safety on our roads as we battle wind, rain, storms and even hail.

Vehicles need to maintain effective safety of tyres, lights, wipers, fluids, batteries, brakes and engines before drivers roll out onto the roads this winter, potentially risking the lives of others on the road.

Strategies for increased road and vehicle safety include driving with lights on, decreasing speed at high weather times, increasing the space between the vehicle in front and keeping up to date with the most current weather forecasts and warnings.

Albany RoadWise Committee Chair Alan Hortin said winter is a time when hazards on the road are larger and our safety is more at risk.

“Slippery conditions, reduced visibility, wet residue, rain, fog, debris on roads and multiple simultaneous distractions often come as a result of our Great Southern storms and impact our ability to judge risk on the road,” he said

“This means it is extremely important that our vehicles are well maintained to assist in keeping drivers and other community members safe across our region and we practice wet weather safety strategies as we behave more cautiously in these winter months.”

With regional borders opening, and COVID-19 restrictions easing it is more important than ever to remember our driver vehicle safety and ensure our road toll remains at zero this winter.
