Owners of urban residential properties in the City of Albany pay a Residential Waste Charge as part of their annual rates. This entitles those properties to a kerbside bin collection, as well as bulk verge collections and vouchers to drop off additional waste.
The City of Albany manages the kerbside bin collection service in conjunction with contractors Cleanaway and Soil Solutions.

Check your bin day
To check your bin collection schedule:
Bin day tips
- Make sure bins are out by 6am on your collection day, with lids closed. Your bin will still be collected on public holidays.
- The maximum collection weight for each bin is 70kg. If you struggle to wheel your bin to the kerb, it is most likely over the limit.
- Make sure there is plenty of space between your bins, vehicles, mailboxes, fences, and trees.
- Please ensure your bin lid is closed. If your bin is overfull and the lid is propped open, there is a risk that the contents may fall out when the bin is lifted during collection. It also increases the change that litter will escape into the environment. Which bins do I need?
To use the City of Albany's kerbside waste service, you'll need the following bins:

In Albany, it is the property owner's responsibility to provide the required kerbside bins, and the resident’s responsibility to keep them in good condition. If you buy a new bin for household waste collection, or a replacement lid, make sure it complies with these requirements. Bins are not provided by the City, but can be purchased from Plastics Plus (148 Albany Highway) or Cleanaway (12 Allerton Street) who also sell spare parts such as lids, wheels, axles and pins.
Looking after your bins
In Albany, it is the property owner’s responsibility to provide the required kerbside bins, and the resident’s responsibility to keep them in good condition. The expected life of a bin is about 10 years. The blue general waste bins at many properties were distributed in 2004, while many recycle bins are around 20 years old - so wear and tear is to be expected.
Bin TLC:
Are your axles rusty? Rusty axles can cause wheels to fall off. Slow rusting by spraying hubs and axles with a rust inhibitor spray.
Check your lid pins. Loose pins can lead to lid breakage. Checks pins regularly and tap them in with a hammer to keep them secure.
Remove the anti-slap for longer lid life! Most of the blue general waste bins have an anti-slap rib which was designed to decrease noise during bin collection. Unfortunately, the anti-slap rib puts extra stress on the bin hinge making it more prone to breaking off. You can easily cut off the rib with a hacksaw to reduce the likelihood of your lid breaking. Assisted bin service
If you have trouble moving your bin to and from the kerb for collection due to permanent or temporary immobility you can apply for the Assisted Bin Service. As part of this service, on your usual bin day the driver will collect your bin from outside your residence, take it to the truck to empty and then return it. To apply for the Assisted Bin Service, first make an appointment with your doctor who will determine if it is required. Ask your doctor to provide a letter confirming your need of the service and send to the City of Albany along with the completed Assisted Bin Service Application Form. Once confirmed and approved the City of Albany will advise you of the commencement date for the service. Please contact the Waste Team on 6820 3000 for more information.
