Wild Fox and Feral Rabbit Control

Published on Wednesday, 20 March 2024 at 4:14:46 PM

The City of Albany is continuing its efforts to control wild foxes and feral rabbits through various methods over the next two months, including the use of traps and the release of the Calicivirus.

Feral Rabbit Trapping at Emu Point: Starting at the end of this month, we'll conduct a 10-night feral rabbit trapping operation using humane cage traps. This effort aims to minimise the impact of rabbit populations in the Emu Point area.

Calicivirus Release in Little Grove and Big Grove: In early April, a specialist contractor will deploy Calicivirus via treated carrots at select sites in the Little Grove and Big Grove area. This virus, exclusive to rabbits and hares, poses no threat to native species, humans, or domestic pets other than rabbits. Ensure your pet rabbits are safeguarded by vaccinating them and securing them in insect-proof enclosures or indoors. Remember to avoid contact with unfamiliar rabbits and routinely disinfect pet enclosures.

Fox Trapping Program: In addition to the rabbit control program, fox trapping will also take place in late April / May on Mount Melville and Lake Seppings. Cage traps and soft-foot traps will be used in the vicinity of recent fox activity. Please note that warning signs will be installed to notify reserve users of the trapping program, and dogs must be kept on a leash in these reserves. Soft-foot traps are specifically designed to safely capture animals without harm, ensuring non-target animals are promptly released if encountered. Stay tuned for exact dates closer to the trapping period.
