Doors to restored Town Hall open for art

Works to Albany’s iconic heritage-listed Town Hall have come to an end as the City of Albany prepare to open the doors for the first time in over a year this week with the Artisan and Designer Gift Fair.

The project to restore the Town Hall to a modern standard commenced in December 2019 and involved conservation works, structural repairs, infrastructure upgrades and technology advancements.

It is envisioned that the building refresh will restore the hall to a modern standard that opens its capacity to host a wide variety of visual and performance arts, collections, exhibitions and community needs.

The doors of the Albany Town Hall will open from 10am on Thursday 3 December with the ground floor dedicated to 6330 Kinjarling Place of Plenty an exhibition of works from the City of Albany Art Collection.

From 4pm on Thursday the popular Artisan and Designer Gift Fair will run until Sunday 5 December in the upstairs floor of the building.

Mayor of Albany Dennis Wellington said that opening the doors to the Town Hall again was an exciting time for locals.

“The last time this incredible building was renovated was back in 1983 and now it has been restored back to its former glory of 1888 heightening its connection with Albany’s heritage, culture and history,” Mayor Wellington said.

“Being able to provide a soft launch opening ahead of the major opening at Easter time means that we can start to make use of this icon right before the holiday season, provide community with an exciting unveiling and gather important feedback on the use of the venue.”

A major launch of Albany Town Hall will take place in April 2021 in conjunction with the Great Southern Art Award.

The City of Albany thanks key partner Lotterywest for making the Town Hall repurposing project possible with a $1 million grant, and the Great Southern Development Commission who have supported the project through the Regional Economic Development Scheme.
