Elections

An Extraordinary Local Government Election will be held on Friday 16 December 2022, to fill one vacancy for the West Ward. The term will expire on 18 October 2025.

Nominations

Nominations open on Wednesday 02 November 2022 and close at 4.00pm sharp on Wednesday 09 November 2022.

A Candidate Information Pack can be found here: Candidate Information Pack. This Information Pack is intended to assist prospective candidates with their nomination, and also give an overview of the election process and the roles and responsibilities of a local government Councillor.

Candidates must complete the mandatory Department of Local Government online induction prior to nominating. Candidates must complete the online registration in order to be eligible to nominate.

Following the close of nominations at 4.00pm on Tuesday 08 November 2022, a ballot draw will be conducted to determine the order of candidates on the ballot paper (Time to be Advised). The ballot draw will be conducted at the City of Albany Administration Building, 102 North Road, Yakamia on Wednesday 09 November 2022. 

Polling Day is Friday 16 December 2022. The Polling Place is the City of Albany Civic Rooms and Council Chambers, 102 North Road, Yakamia.

The poll closes at 6.00pm on that day, and the count will commence shortly after the close of polling. Candidates and their supporters and community members are welcome to attend.

Have your say in the 2023 Local Government Election.

Enrolling to vote

Ratepayers and residents of the City of Albany are entitled to vote in local government elections.

You might need information about your voting entitlements if you:

  • Live in Albany and recently turned 18
  • Own a business that owns or leases a property in Albany
  • Own or lease a property in a ward other than the one in which you live
  • Live outside Albany but own property and pay rates in the City of Albany

You can visit the WA Electoral Commission website to check if you are enrolled. 

The City of Albany Local Government Election is a postal election. If you are an eligible voter and have enrolled to vote, you will receive your ballot paper package by mail. To vote, follow the instructions included in the package. You may lodge your completed ballot paper by post, or by placing it in the ballot box during business hours at the City of Albany Administration Building, 102 North Road, Yakamia.

We must receive your postal voting package before 6.00pm on polling day. If you do not think your postal voting package can be returned by post in time, you can deliver it by hand to the City of Albany Administration Building, 102 North Road, Yakamia during business hours.

While voting in a local government election is not compulsory, we encourage you to participate and lodge your vote.

Enrolment forms:

Form 2 - Enrolment eligibility claim form: Fill in this form if you own or occupy rateable property in a district or ward, but are not represented on the residents roll (Western Australian Electoral Commission Roll) for that district or ward and want to be able to vote at local government elections for that district.

Form 2A - Application to register a nominee for a body corporate: Fill in this form if the body corporate: owns or occupies rateable property in a district or ward, but are not represented on the residents roll (Western Australian Electoral Commission Roll) for that district or ward and wants to be able to vote at local government elections for that district.

Form 2B - Application to register a nominee for co-owners or occupiers: Fill in this form if the persons: own or occupy rateable property in a district or ward, but are not represented on the residents roll (Western Australian Electoral Commission Roll) for that district or ward. Note: If a proposed nominee is on the residents roll (Western Australian Electoral Commission Roll) for the district or ward, they are automatically enrolled to vote.

Form 2B - Application to register a nominee for co-owners or occupiers

Voting method

All postal elections are managed by the Western Australian Electoral Commission (WAEC), which appoints a Returning Officer for each election.

Ordinary and extraordinary elections use the first past the post method of voting.
