City Road Maintenance Program

The City delivers ongoing road maintenance across rural and urban areas using a cyclical service model. Works are scheduled to maximise efficiency, weather conditions, and resource availability.

Due to factors such as weather, plant availability, and operational priorities, daily work locations may change, so the information below outlines how and when areas are serviced, rather than exact dates and locations.

Sealed Road Maintenance

  • Asphalt crews undertake repairs primarily during dry months, when conditions allow for long-lasting results.
  • Works include:
    • Patching and repair of failed sections
    • Mill and fill treatments for deteriorated pavement
  • During the wet season, temporary repairs are carried out to maintain safety until permanent works can be completed.

Road Sweeping

  • The road sweeping program operates on a continuous rotation across the City:
    • CBD areas are serviced weekly
    • All other kerbed areas are serviced on a 4–6-week cycle
  • Scheduling may vary depending on leaf fall, weather, and operational requirements.

Unsealed Road Grading

Grading is completed using four operational zones (EastA, East B, Central & West), each working on a programmed rotation.

Summer Grading

  • Focus on smoothing and maintaining the running surface
  • Roads are typically serviced on a 6–8-week cycle

Winter Grading

  • More extensive works are undertaken using available moisture to:
    • Re-form road shape
    • Recover material from road edges
    • Improve drainage and driving conditions
  • Program timing depends heavily on weather and ground conditions

Program Flexibility

While the City works to maintain consistent service cycles, the program is dynamic and may change due to:

  • Weather conditions
  • Plant breakdowns or maintenance
  • Staff availability
  • Urgent or reactive works
