Building Inclusive Albany Communities

Published on Tuesday, 13 April 2021 at 9:07:12 AM

The City of Albany has been selected as one of 10 local governments across the State to be a part of the Building Inclusive Communities WA Project aimed at creating more socially inclusive communities.

Building Inclusive Communities WA is an initiative supported by Lotterywest and lead by Inclusive Solutions where local governments undertake capacity-building and community development activities.

The project will run across two years in response to the increased social isolation felt by so many communities across the State to ensure individuals feel a sense of belonging regardless of ability, race, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation.

Community members and groups will be able to attend workshops, webinars and get access to online tool kits across the program.

Executive Director Community Services Nathan Watson said the City has a strong focus on inclusion and welcomed being part of the Building Inclusive Communities Project.

“Everyone should have opportunities to participate in community life and feel they have value to add and the programs and services we deliver at the City are aimed at helping our community achieve that,” he said.

“The Inclusive Communities project is a fantastic opportunity for residents to support each other in building their own inclusive community, learn more about social inclusion within their groups and potentially attract new members.

“Covid-19 has highlighted the importance of being connected, having a network of contacts and reaching out to others in times of struggle despite any perceived challenges.

“It also offers a direct feedback and experience-sharing loop with other groups and clubs across the State that may have had to navigate comparable challenges and can offer some friendly insight.”

Thanks to the City of Albany and Lotterywest, participating in the project is free for clubs and community groups within the City of Albany.

A series of helpful webinars will commence from 28 April where community members and groups can register at http://bicwa_webinar1.eventbrite.com.au
