Cruise lines shown southern wonders

Cruise linerRepresentatives from major cruise lines have had the opportunity to experience first-hand some of the history, culture, natural beauty and hospitality that Albany can offer their guests following a successful WA Cruise Exchange conference where the City of Albany hosted representatives from eight global cruise lines recently with the support of Tourism WA.

The WA Cruise Exchange took in the sights of Albany including the National Anzac Centre, Torndirrup National Park, the Port and Albany’s Historic Whaling Station; giving them a unique and in-depth experience of Albany’s history, culture and natural beauty.

The familiarisations also included indigenous cultural experiences such as a walking tour, speed painting and traditional dances by local aboriginal people.

Mayor of Albany Dennis Wellington said Albany’s cruise ship season is an important event in the City of Albany’s calendar each year that supports our tourism footprint, provides business opportunities and allows our international guests to see the beauty of our City.

“We are showing the cruise line representatives that including Albany on their itineraries is a smart choice and that the town can give their guests a range of unique, quality experiences,” he said.

“This is incredibly important business for us, it opens Albany up to higher foot traffic in our retail space, more opportunity for visitors to experience the awe of the National Anzac Centre, an increase in tourism expenditure across the City and networking opportunities on an international scale.”

About 12 ships visit Albany in a traditional cruise ship season, and favourable exposure for the town through the WA Cruise Exchange could increase this number.

According to Tourism Minister Paul Papalia, the WA Cruise Exchange was an excellent opportunity to showcase the State’s regional cruise destinations that are growing in popularity with cruise lines.

“The Exchange was a wonderful forum for our premium local tourism operators to show the major players in the cruise industry that we have what it takes to impress their guests. WA’s port destinations have the reliable infrastructure and quality shore-side experiences that can encourage repeat business.

“The familiarisations have made sure that Albany is firmly on their radar to be included as a positive addition to future itineraries, helping to grow tourism in our regional areas,” Minister Papalia said.

The Cruise Ship season will begin in October 2019 and finish in March 2020.
