Funding helps to reduce fire risk

Heading into yet another fire season, the City of Albany have been successful in receiving a grant of $195,000 from the Department of Fire and Emergency Services.

Falling under the second round of the 2020-2021 Mitigation Activity Fund (MAF) Grants Program, City of Albany have been considered a high bushfire-risk area in need of assisted mitigation measures.

The aim of the funding is to increase fire management capacity and overall resilience of communities as well as support the City’s Bushfire Risk Management Plan endorsed by Council in September.

Activities undertaken by the City of Albany will include prescribed burns, creation of firebreaks and mechanical works to remove weeds that are conducive to fast spreading fires.

Mayor of Albany Dennis Wellington said the funding couldn’t come at a better time.

“Given the recent rain and milder conditions we have experienced in the Great Southern, elevated levels of fuel loads have increased in areas of bushland across the City of Albany that need to be dealt with before the risk gets higher,” he said.

“On top of the work the City already do each year to reduce fire risk to residents, this additional funding will mean the work done this fire season will help mitigate risk in years to come.

“It is an incredibly important job that our City Fire Management team do alongside volunteer fire brigades and Department of Fire and Emergency Services so any extra help they can get is a big win for the community as well.”

Fire Mitigation works have already started in the City of Albany behind Collingwood Road Oval and are expected to continue into the new year.

Bushfire Risk Management funding is supported by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services through the State Government of Western Australia.
