There are 24 nominations for this year’s Local Government election in the City of Albany, the third highest number of nominations since the City’s inaugural election in 1999.

Albany’s incumbent Mayor and all incumbent Councillors have put their hand up to re-run for Council, and each of the seven positions up for election will go to a vote after attracting multiple candidates.

It will be a two-way contest for Mayor, while there are three candidates in the Breaksea Ward, two in Frederickstown Ward, four in Kalgan Ward, four in Vancouver Ward, three in West Ward, and six in Yakamia Ward.

Nominations for Council closed last Thursday, with the final field eclipsing the 21 nominations received in 2017, but falling short of the 31 received in 2007 and 36 in 1999.

Chief Executive Officer Andrew Sharpe said it was very encouraging that so many people wanted to be a voice for their community and make a positive contribution to Albany.

“We’re very lucky in Albany to have had strong representation on Council for a number of years and again we’ve got some very worthy candidates showing interest in being part of Albany’s future,” he said.

“Providing good leadership to Albany is essential to continuing to build on the excellent work our previous Councils have achieved.

“It’s an exciting time for Albany, there has been a lot of positive things happening in our community and we look forward to that continuing after this year’s election.”

WA Electoral Commission’s returning officer for Albany Sally Thomas encouraged the community to vote, with postal vote packages due to arrive in mail boxes after the September long weekend.

“Local government is an important tier of government with direct influence on the community you live in, so make your vote count,” she said.

Profiles of each candidate are displayed at the entry of the City’s administration at North Road, and are also available on the WA Electoral Commission website at www.elections.wa.gov.au.

Election Day is Saturday, October 19. Successful candidates are elected for a four-year term expiring in 2023.
