Shower heads help Albany to be a Waterwise Town

With much of the Great Southern land in desperate need of a drink of water, Albany has become a member of the Water Corporation’s 2020-2021 Waterwise Towns Program for the first time.

Albany is fortunate to have experienced much needed rainfall recently, but it falls short of what the region historically receives, particularly for our farming community and outlying areas of the city.

In an effort to reduce Albany’s water consumption, the City have implemented initiatives such as pool blankets and waterless urinals at ALAC, as well as timed irrigation practices across City gardens and parks.

This year the City are once again partnering with the Water Corporation to deliver the Shower Head Swap program to residents who can swap their old shower head for a new water conscious one.

Executive Director Infrastructure, Development and Environment Paul Camins said being a part of the Waterwise Towns Program complements the partnership with Water Corporation to deliver water saving projects.

“As we continue to receive below average rainfall each year, it is important for Albany and the Great Southern region to reduce our water usage in order to protect this precious finite resource,” Mr Camins said.

“Our last Shower Head Swap program was a success with over 400 shower heads being swapped for new ones that deliver 7.5L per minute rather than a 9L per minute standard of the old shower heads.

“Combining this with shorter showers, turning the taps off properly and monitoring our water use, we can all have an impact on the valuable water we save each day.”

The Shower Head Swap program will be available from 1 October by taking an old shower head into the Albany Public Library for swapping.
