The City of Albany’s first ever festival celebrating Albany’s maritime history has received the support of Festivals Australia, Tourism Western Australia and Harvest Road with Leeuwin Coast to make the event a highlight of the school holidays.

Throwing their support behind the Noongar Menang Cultural Hub is the Federal Government through Festivals Australia who have provided $40,000 for this important cultural element to go ahead.

The Noongar-Menang Cultural Hub will celebrate local traditional land owners’ connection with Albany’s maritime history with Dreamtime Stories, Women’s Weaving and traditional cooking demonstrations.

Joining Festivals Australia is Tourism Western Australia who have committed $7,000 through their Regional Events Scheme that supports events that add vibrancy and excitement to the region.

Harvest Road and Leeuwin Coast are a fitting sponsor of the Maritime Festival, bringing $5,000, a local flavour and aquaculture businesses that honours WA oceans and supports a sustainable maritime industry.

Albany Mayor Dennis Wellington said the City were thrilled that so many agencies had come on board to support the inaugural festival.

“Considering this is the first time we have held this event, the vast amount of support from the Federal and State Government as well as a new local business is fantastic,” he said.

“This festival has a unique ability to attract tourists from across the state as well as engage the locals with stories and celebration of the place they live and love.

“We are hoping that this is the first of many Maritime Festivals and the valuable support Festivals Australia, Tourism Western Australia and Harvest Road with Leeuwin Coast have provided will help to enable the festival to come back in the years ahead.”
