Youth focus on Albany's future

Young people in Albany are invited to have their say on how the City can create a friendly and welcoming place for youth and influence how they engage, add value and participate in their community.

City of Albany’s Youth Friendly Albany Strategy was developed in 2017 with support from Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and in consultation with Albany Youth Advisory Council.

The three-year strategy is due for review in 2020 and will focus on Youth Engagement and Inclusion, Youth Spaces and Places, Employment, Education and Training and finally Events and Social Opportunities.

A key achievement of the 2017-2020 strategy was identifying the need for a youth specific precinct in the heart of Albany, which is now under construction as the Youth Challenge Park on Sanford Road.

Acting Community Development and Engagement Manager Rani Param said the City’s Youth Friendly Albany Strategy was a key pillar in ensuring that our young people’s voices are heard.

“Our young people have different perspectives, views and skills that offer incredible value to our community that needs to be captured and listened to,” she said.

“All 10 to 25 years olds can have input into how we create a more youth friendly city that recognises the contribution of our young people, offers them a safe play to live and play, provides them with a range of opportunities and ensures there are events to keep them active and stimulated.

“We need our young people to contribute to the review of the Youth Friendly Albany Strategy and share their vision so it is relevant and continues to support great outcomes for youth in our community.”

Young people can take part in the review by attending City pop-ups at youth targeted events, completing and returning Feedback Postcards available at City facilities and local schools and heading online to complete the survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/AlbYouthPlan
