City makes strides in workplace gender equality

The City of Albany is embracing this year’s theme #EachforEqual for International Women’s Day by celebrating the contributions and achievements women are making within its workplace and community.

EachforEqual aims to highlight the importance of equality for women around the world, and gender parity in the workplace plays a key role.

With 46 per cent of its leadership positions occupied by women, the City of Albany is well ahead of the local government average of 31.4 per cent for WA and the NT.

Albany also has strong female representation on Council with five women providing high-level leadership and contributing to making important decisions for their community.

Some of these women feature in a short video the City is releasing for International Women’s Day in a show of support for gender equality.

Chief Executive Officer Andrew Sharpe said the City was very proud to have such a strong group of women whose knowledge, skills and experience were invaluable.

“Our organisation and Albany as a whole is richer for the contributions and achievements women make,” he said.

“More than 51 per cent of the City’s workforce are women and we will continue to foster a culture that supports them and provides opportunities.

“As one of Albany’s largest employers, it’s our role to enable women to shine and we’re fortunate to have many women in senior positions within the City, including in traditionally male dominated fields.”

Executive Director Community Services Susan Kay, who features in the City’s video, encouraged others to support the #EachforEqual aim.

“Women from all backgrounds and all walks of life have so much to contribute,” she said.

“The City is contributing very positively to change in equality within the workplace and I hope the achievements of our women inspire, motivate and encourage other women to succeed.”

International Women’s Day is on Sunday, March 8. More about #EachforEqual can be found at https://www.internationalwomensday.com/
