Albany’s Garage Sale Trail awarded

The City of Albany is one of 10 councils out of 140 to receive an award for its involvement in the national Garage Sale Trail for 2019.

The City has taken out the Best Regional Campaign Award recognising the way Garage Sale Trail was embraced by the council and supported by the community.

This was the first time the City of Albany took part in Trail, joining more than 16,000 garage sales held simultaneously across the country on October 19 and 20.

Albany families, communities and organisations got involved with the campaign, including The Track who invited 50 stallholders to a group Swap Meet and the Albany Youth Support Association who jumped into the official Trail Blazers to promote the campaign.

City of Albany Chief Executive Officer Andrew Sharpe said the event was a great success, bringing attention to the “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” message to help decrease the amount of waste that goes into Albany’s landfill.

“It is a fantastic achievement to receive the award in our first year as part of the Garage Sale Trail, and a testament to the community members who put their time and energy into each and every sale across the weekend,” Mr Sharpe said.

“The City works hard to improve sustainability across the Albany region and initiatives such as Garage Sale Trail help us achieve this goal and create a foundation for the future.”

Garage Sale Trail co-founder Darryl Nichols said the award was the result of a committed and passionate approach by the City of Albany.

"Through their involvement and promotion of the program, the City of Albany demonstrated great leadership in sustainability and reuse and ultimately helped make this year's Garage Sale Trail such a success both locally and nationally,” Mr Nichols said.

“Multiple media outcomes featuring the City of Albany CEO, Andrew Sharpe and local sellers, captured the key themes and messages of the campaign perfectly and encouraged residents to re-use and dispose of waste responsibly both over the weekend event and beyond.”

Garage Sale Trail 2020 takes place on October 17-18 and residents can pre-register at www.garagesaletrail.com.au.
