Rats of Tobruk, a World War II exhibition on display at the Princess Royal Fortress has attracted interstate virtual visitation from Australian Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Rtd) and Her Excellency Mrs Hurley.

A former Officer in the Australian Army and now the Commander-in-Chief of the Australian Defence Force, the Governor-General’s interest in military history is deep rooted in his life and career.

“It is important that we continue to honour all those who have served our country,” the Governor-General said.

“The Rats of Tobruk Exhibition brings the service, sacrifice and bravery of the men who served there to life for younger generations – it helps ensure that they will never be forgotten. Linda and I are delighted to be able to tour virtually and look forward to visiting Albany in person when conditions permit.”

The Governor-General’s military past involved positions with the Royal Australian Regiment, attendance at the U.S. Army War College, commanding the 1st Brigade in Darwin and supporting troops in East Timor.

He later went on to the role of Chief of Capability Development Group, Chief of Joint Operations Command and Vice Chief of the Defence Force before becoming Chief of the Defence Force in 2011.

Mayor of Albany Dennis Wellington said it was an honour and a privilege to take the Governor-General on a virtual tour of the Rats of Tobruk exhibition.

“We are lucky enough to have this exhibition of true Australian spirit in Albany and are thrilled that the Governor-General is virtually able to tour the exhibit,” he said

“Albany’s rich Anzac history is something the local community and all Western Australians hold close to their heart and the Princess Royal Fortress is a venue we are incredibly proud of.

“Covid has changed how many of us live our lives, so the fact we can offer this tour virtually to our Governor-General amid a lockdown is just a wonderful example of our ability to adapt.”

The Governor-General virtually toured the exhibit on Thursday 16 September along with 2 Rats of Tobruk Western Australian members and 4 local descendants.
