Southern Trail Terminus finds new home

A project to create a new and improved Southern Trail Terminus for the Bibbulmun Track and Munda Biddi Trail in the heart of the Albany CBD will commence this month.

Relocation of the Southern Trail Terminus from Proudlove Parade to central York Street will deliver a destination terminus with improved arrival and departure amenities such as decking structure, signage, bike racks and seating.

Currently located next to the old railway station which used to house the Albany Visitor Centre prior to its relocation to York Street, the location has little to offer trail users now.

With a lack of convenient essential amenities and the Albany Visitor Centre another 700m away, the change in location will make for a more appropriate and prominent destination point for trail users.

City of Albany Executive Director Infrastructure, Development and Environment Paul Camins said the relocation to York Street will benefit local business, visitors and residents.

“Tour groups, avid walkers and adventure seekers will either depart or arrive from the Southern Terminus to explore two incredible aspects of our coastline in the Bibbulmun Track and Munda Biddi Trail,” he said.

“Providing them with a start or finish point to their journey that allows them to experience what Albany has to offer at our Visitor Centre, present comfortable amenities and promote surrounding businesses and services will have a positive impact on everyone.

“Our City is something we should be ensuring is front and centre for arriving visitors and that leaves a fantastic lasting impression on those that are departing”.

Works on the Southern Terminus Project will begin on April 19 and aimed to be completed by the end of June 2021, with works funded by the Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions and Great Southern Development Commission.
