The Great Southern Youth Art Award (GSYAA) held its award night on Friday evening, showcasing the extraordinary talent of young artists within the Great Southern.

More than 40 entries were received from across the region, showcasing artistic exploration through both two-dimensional and three-dimensional pieces.

Hosted at the Albany Town Hall, the event announced the four winning artists who were selected by a judging panel comprised of local artistic luminaries Mand Markey, Cynthia Orr, and Linda Chambers.

Claiming the Under 12 Three-Dimensional prize was 11-year-old Oaklea Weaver, who’s polymer clay creation titled Gnomeville packed in an incredible amount of detail amongst its fun and colour.

16-year-old Jordan Proctor’s metal work Cocky clinched the 12-18 Three-Dimensional category for his skilful welding and descriptive piece placement.

Celebrating the natural environment through her combined use of organic materials with acrylics, 8-year-old artist Aila Michael was awarded as the Under 12 Two-Dimensional winner for her thoughtful composition and artistic joy in Banksias.

Winning the 12-18 Two-Dimensional prize was 17-year-old Annabelle Lydeamore and her piece Jeanne D’Arc which utilised lino print to embody strength, belief and courage in this contemporary take of a classic tale.

Mayor of Albany Greg Stocks shared his admiration for the creativity displayed at the GSYAA.

"The Great Southern Youth Art Awards celebrate the diverse talent and creativity of our region's young artists,” he said.

"As Mayor, I am immensely proud to witness the growth and development of our budding artists. I encourage our up-and-coming creatives to continue pushing boundaries and exploring their talent."

The GSYAA 2024 exhibition is open in the Albany Town Hall until April 24, with visitors encouraged to vote in the Popular Choice Award. The winner will be announced at the conclusion of the exhibition.
