Hanrahan landfill flare installed as City manages waste future

The City has reached a milestone in the management of the Hanrahan Road Landfill, with the installation of a landfill gas flare designed to capture and treat emissions generated on the site.

As the landfill approaches the later stages of its operational life the new infrastructure forms a key part of the City’s long-term strategy to responsibly manage, close and rehabilitate the site.

Landfill gas is generated as organic waste decomposes, producing methane, a potent greenhouse gas that can become trapped beneath the surface as sections of the landfill are progressively capped.

The newly installed system uses a network of underground wells and pipework to collect the gas and direct it to a vertical flare unit where it is safely treated.

The flare operates using a small, enclosed and controlled flame that converts methane into carbon dioxide and water vapour, significantly reducing its environmental impact.

Manager Operations Damon Lawrence said the project demonstrated the City’s commitment to responsible environmental management and planning for the future.

"The installation of this landfill gas flare is an important step in ensuring the Hanrahan Road Landfill is managed safely and sustainably as we move towards its closure in 2032," he said.

"Rather than allowing methane to escape into the atmosphere, this system captures and treats the gas in a controlled manner, reducing emissions and protecting the environment.

"This investment reflects the City’s commitment to responsible waste management and to delivering long-term environmental outcomes for our community."

The project is delivered in partnership with LMS Energy, a leading methane abatement specialist, which manages bioenergy and emissions solutions at almost 70 sites across the country.

While the flare stack is visible from Hanrahan Road and parts of the landfill, the unit is fully enclosed, self-contained and located within a secure area that is not accessible to the public.

LMS Energy installed the system and will operate the flare, which is now active following after final connections, testing and Department of Water and Environmental Regulation approvals.

The City will provide updates on the closure of Hanrahan Road Landfill, including information about future waste management arrangements and plans to support a sustainable waste future.
