Albany Regional Tennis Centre – Stage 2A

Background

The Albany Regional Tennis Centre is being developed as a multi-stage project within the Eastern Precinct of the Centennial Park Sporting Complex.

The overarching purpose of the project is to develop a 16-court regional tennis centre to support increased participation, event attraction, and long-term growth of tennis in Albany.

As part of the project, Merrifield Park Tennis Club and Lawley Park Tennis Club have amalgamated to form the Albany Tennis Club. South Coast Tennis Club and Emu Point Sporting Club (tennis segment) also regularly utilise the facility.

The amalgamation provides several benefits including:

  • Increased memberships and social opportunities
  • Greater opportunities to evolve the club through existing volunteers
  • Greater financial capability
  • More effective planning and maintenance of courts and facilities
  • Reduced volunteer burden

Stage 2A will involve the construction of four additional courts and lighting for the six existing courts.

Should future funding allow, additional stages will include:

  • Construction of a further six tennis courts
  • Floodlighting for the four Stage 2 courts

Objectives and Outcomes

  • Increased participation in tennis with new state and national event opportunities. Indicators suggest a minimum immediate 151% increase in facility usage over current Tennis Club facilities. Increasing participation and active, healthy lifestyles with positive mental health outcomes.
  • Allow Albany to host major junior and senior tournaments and events.
  • Encouraging social and sporting club growth.
  • Complement and build on the recently completed and well-developed sporting infrastructure throughout the Centennial Park Precinct

Scope

Stage 2A will involve:

  • Construction of 4 additional tennis courts.
  • Installation of floodlighting to the existing 6 courts.
  • Associated infrastructure works including fencing, poles, and court fit-out.

The Albany Tennis Club will continue operating from both Lawley Park and the Centennial Park facility until at least 10 courts are completed at the new Regional Tennis Centre. Following this, the lease at Lawley Park will be surrendered back to the City.

Lighting across all 10 courts will enable increased evening use and public court hire opportunities, supporting additional revenue generation for the Club.

Funding

The total project value is $1.5 Million and has been funded by Department of Creative Industries, Tourism and Sport.

Timing

Construction of Stage 1 was completed and officially opened in January 2025.

Stage 2A, involving the construction of four additional courts and lighting for six courts, has been approved and construction is underway.

Future works, subject to additional funding, include installation of the remaining lights for the four Stage 2 courts, along with the design and construction of the remaining six courts.

Construction is expected to commence in June 2026 for the lighting of six courts, and in September 2026 for the construction of four courts. The project is anticipated to be completed by June 2026 for the lighting works and by November 2026 for the construction of the four courts.
