Native Plant Giveaway at Green Fair on the Square 2026

The City of Albany has curated two packs of 5 locally native and waterwise plants for participants of the Native Plant Giveaway initiative. These plants are suitable for our local climate and soils and are attractive and easy to grow. Once established, plants require minimal watering and will attract pollinators, birds and other wildlife to your garden.

This initiative is proudly co-funded by Water Corporation’s Waterwise Greening Scheme and forms part of our ambition to be a leading waterwise community.

FAQS

What types of native plants are available?

A variety of ground covers, sedges and small shrubs are available. Plants have been selected to fit small gardens but are also suitable for larger gardens. Participants will receive a guide that includes a list of species and their description.

Are the plants locally sourced or grown?

Yes, the plants are grown by a local nursery using seed collected from the region.

What size pots do the seedlings come in?

The seedlings are in small tube stock pots, around 50mm tall. Tube stock are more delicate but will establish into stronger plants more quickly than larger pots once planted, if properly cared for.

How do I care for my plants after collection?

The Native Plant Giveaway has been planned for May to ensure planting occurs when the first rains begin. It is recommended that the seedings are planted as soon as possible after you receive them. Participants will receive a step-by-step planting guide to help ensure success.

What happens if I miss out, will there be a waitlist?

There is no waitlist, however, any unclaimed or unallocated plant packs will be redistributed and available between 12noon – 1pm on Sat 9 May at our Green Fair on the Square Sustainability event.

There will also be free tree seedlings available on the day that do not require registration.

Where will plant collection take place?

Your plant pack must be collected at the Green Fair on the Square event being held at the Albany Town Square, York Street between 9am – 12pm on Saturday 9 May.

What do I need to bring on the day (ID, confirmation email, bags, boxes)?

Please bring your confirmation email (on your phone) as proof of registration. You may also be asked to show ID to confirm your details. We recommend bringing your own boxes, bag or a crate to safely transport your plants, as tube stock seedlings are small and can be easily damaged.

Can someone else collect the plants on my behalf?

Yes, someone else can collect your plant pack on your behalf. They will need to provide your confirmation email and details at the collection point. It is recommended they have your full name and any relevant information to assist staff on the day.
