Review of Horse Exercise Areas in the City of Albany (Closed)

Under the City's Animal Local Law 2020, Council may set aside an area upon which  a person may ride or drive a horse or into which a person may bring a horse.

This can be any of the following:

  • Reserve;
  • Foreshore;
  • Portion of a reserve; or
  • Portion of a foreshore

Currently there are two Horse Exercise Areas determined through this Local Law:

  1. A section of Reserve No. 1474 (Middleton Beach); and
  2. The Stidwell Bridle Trail

The City is aware that other areas of the City are being utilised for hose activities, and has identified the need to asses where additional Horse Exercise Areas need to be determined under this Local Law.

The first step in this review is to identify where horses are being taken on City of Albany managed land, so that this information can be fed into the decision making process.

In order to capture this information, the City has developed an online mapping survey to allow people to draw where they currently take their horses on a map.

Some additional questions are included in the survey to define the type of horse activity undertaken at each site, and what this activity involves. Survey data is recorded anonymously, and will not be used to reprimand anyone for using non-permitted areas.

At the completion of the survey, the data collected will then be assessed with the intention of presenting additional Horse Exercise Areas to Council for determination under the Animals Local Law.

Therefore, the City currently invites you to take this opportunity to inform the City of where you take your horses. This survey will be open until 11 January 2023.
