The City of Albany is proud to support National Reconciliation Week (NRW) 2025 with a series of free community events that reflect this year’s theme, Bridging Now to Next.
Held annually from May 27 to June 3, NRW invites all Australians to learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and consider their role in reconciliation.
The 2025 theme speaks to the connection between past, present and future. It calls on all Australians to move forward together—to acknowledge history, take meaningful action now, and look ahead with purpose.
Albany’s program begins with the National Sorry Day Symposium on Monday, May 26, hosted by Southern Aboriginal Corporation and Great Southern Aboriginal Health Service at the Albany Entertainment Centre from 9am to 1pm.
Albany Public Library will offer free lunchtime film screenings, including In My Blood It Runs on Tuesday, May 27, and The Habits of New Norcia on Wednesday, May 28, followed by a Q&A with survivor Mary Wynne.
On Thursday, May 29, a special Reconciliation Week Playgroup will run from 10am to 1pm at the Child and Parent Centre, open to families from across the Great Southern. The event will include cultural learning activities, storytelling, and traditional food.
City of Albany CEO Andrew Sharpe said the local program highlights the importance of listening, learning, and walking together.
“Reconciliation is an ongoing journey, and this year’s theme reminds us that meaningful change relies on collective action,” he said.
“Supporting these events is one way we can help create spaces for truth-telling, cultural sharing and community healing.”
Reconciliation banners, sponsored by local organisations and businesses, will also be proudly displayed on Stirling Terrace and York Street throughout the week, showcasing the artwork of Western Australian Aboriginal Noongar artist, Darryl Dempster.
