The City of Albany has welcomed the introduction of capped airfares for those flying between Albany and Perth as part of a $19.8 million statewide initiative between the State Government and regional airlines to make regional airfares more affordable.
City-owned Albany Regional Airport is one of 23 regional airports across Western Australia, with Rex airlines servicing more than 50,000 passengers a year.
The capped airfares is an Australia-first scheme to ensure air travel to Perth from the State’s regions is more affordable.
Starting from July 1, the most a regional resident will pay when flying from Albany to Perth is $199 for a one-way flight both ways, which must be booked as a return flight.
Following several years of impact and uncertainty on the aviation industry resulting from the COVID pandemic, and increasing living costs making flying a luxury for many households, the capped airfares are timely.
Albany Mayor Dennis Wellington said cheaper flights means it will be more affordable for people to fly, making it a win for the regions.
“I think it’s a terrific exercise to try and get more people flying on these regional routes and for Albany it will be great for more people to have the choice of flying to Perth,” he said.
“While in the past residents have had access to sale fares, prices for airfares have fluctuated throughout the year. The capped airfares ensure residents won’t pay any more than the capped price all year round, with lower sale fares still being offered.
“The cap means people can book flights with confidence in the prices they’ll be paying, making it easier for them to plan to travel to medical appointments, visit family and friends, or attend major sporting events.
“Getting more people flying ultimately makes these regional air routes more viable and that delivers benefits to everyone.”
