Illegal wood collection results in court fine

The City of Albany is urging residents to respect environmental regulations after a recent court case resulted in a $3,850 fine for unlawful wood collection.

A local man was fined in the Albany Magistrates Court after admitting to removing fallen timber from roadside bushland without approval, disturbing the land, and providing false information to investigators.

City of Albany Manager Public Health and Safety Scott Reitsema said the outcome was a timely reminder that collecting wood from public land without a permit is illegal.

“Collecting fallen timber may seem harmless, but these materials are critical habitat for native wildlife,” he said.

“Dead and hollowed trees provide breeding hollows for endangered black cockatoos and shelter for animals like the Western Ringtail Possum.

“Removing them damages fragile ecosystems and undermines the efforts of those doing the right thing.”

The City is reminding residents that collecting wood from public land without a permit is illegal and may lead to prosecution.

Residents are also encouraged to buy firewood only from licensed suppliers and take caution when sourcing it online.

Suspicious activity can be reported to the City by calling 6820 3999 or using the Report It function at www.albany.wa.gov.au/reportit.
