New equipment enhances beach accessibility

Beach access has been significantly improved for people with mobility challenges thanks to new equipment and upgraded infrastructure at two of Albany’s most popular beaches.

The City of Albany has installed additional beach accessibility equipment at Binalup / Middleton Beach and Emu Point, including two new all-terrain beach walkers and a second beach wheelchair.

At Binalup / Middleton Beach, the new beach walker complements the existing Hippocampe wheelchair, which was introduced in 2022 and has been widely used by residents and visitors.

Both are now housed in a new purpose-built storage facility at the rear of the refurbished Surf Life Saving Club, complete with hooks, signage and improved accessibility.

Emu Point has also received a new beach walker and wheelchair, replacing the aging equipment previously available at this site.

A new storage container closer to the shoreline makes it easier for users to access the equipment, while recent repairs to the storm-damaged beach ramp have further improved access.

Executive Director Nathan Watson said the upgrades support the City’s broader goal to make public spaces more inclusive.

“Everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy Albany’s coastline, regardless of age or mobility,” he said.

“These improvements reflect our ongoing commitment to accessibility and help ensure our beaches can be enjoyed by all members of the community.

“With close to 2,500 residents identifying as needing assistance due to disability, and over 9,000 residents aged 65 and over, initiatives like this make a real difference.”

Both the beach wheelchairs and walkers are free to access 24/7.

The All-Terrain Rollator Walkers are designed to navigate soft sand, gravel, and uneven terrain, and feature a seat and storage space for added comfort and convenience.
