Albany joins National Tribute to Bondi Beach Victims

Published on Thursday, 22 January 2026 at 10:06:20 AM

Albany will be the only regional Western Australian city to take part in the Federal Government’s 15 Pillars of Light initiative, honouring the victims and those impacted by the Bondi Beach terrorist attack.

On the National Day of Mourning, 22 January 2026, the initiative will illuminate 15 pillars of light across locations nationwide, symbolising the 15 lives lost and standing as a collective expression of compassion and reflection.

Guided by the Bondi Chabad community, the national theme “light will win, a gathering of unity and remembrance” reflects a shared commitment to honouring those lost while affirming hope, connection and resilience in the face of tragedy.

Albany will take part by projecting one of the 15 national beams of white light from the Town Hall into the night sky, standing in solidarity with the Bondi community and communities across the country.

In addition, the City of Albany will illuminate the external walls of the Town Hall, and flags at both the Town Hall and the City’s Administration Building will be flown at half-mast as a sign of respect.

Mayor of Albany Greg Stocks said the initiative offered an important moment for the community to come together in quiet reflection.

“Albany is honoured to stand with communities across Australia in remembrance of the lives lost,” Mayor Stocks said.

“We are proud to be the regional representative of Western Australia to honour the victims, support those grieving, and reaffirm our shared commitment to unity and compassion.

“Lighting our Albany Town Hall is a simple but deeply meaningful way to say that even in moments of profound sadness, we choose unity, compassion and hope.

“Our hearts are with the families, loved ones and all those affected.”

Community members are invited to observe a nationwide one-minute silence at 4.01pm AWST, during a National Memorial Service from 4.00pm AWST, livestreamed via Chabad of Bondi YouTube channel.

Condolence messages can also be shared through the NSW Government’s Bondi Beach online condolence book.
