The City of Albany is welcoming the return of traditional Anzac Day services this April, albeit with a reduced capacity in line with Covid restrictions to continue to ensure the safety of our community.
The City is again supporting Albany’s RSL sub-branch to host the Dawn and Commemorative Services, which will include the return of the traditional Gunfire Breakfast and Anzac Day Troop March to honour the sacrifices of past and present Australian and New Zealand military personnel.
City of Albany Mayor Dennis Wellington said these services were essential to honouring our nation’s commitment to never forget the sacrifices of those who have served for our country.
“Anzac Day is deeply rooted in Albany’s rich history, and the City is glad to see these important commemorations return this year,” he said. “The City is proud to support the Albany RSL to ensure these services honour our troops and pay homage to Albany’s close connection to the Anzacs.”
Following the success of last year’s Driveway Service, those who cannot attend the Commemorative Services are encouraged to still rise at dawn and hold personal commemorations in their driveways.
Albany RSL President Helen Tasker said the driveway services gave the whole community a way to participate in commemorations on Anzac Day.
“While this year’s commemorations will look different to previous years, we ask for our community to be understanding of the constraints Covid-19 is creating and if they can’t attend a memorial service, a personal driveway commemoration is still a great way to honour our war heroes,” she said.
The Dawn Service will be a free, ticketed service at the Desert Mounted Corps Memorial restricted to 500 attendees. A bus service is included with each ticket and will run from the Albany Entertainment Centre between 4am and 5am.
A livestream of the Dawn Service will be held at Albany Entertainment Centre from 5am which will be a free ticketed event with a maximum capacity of 450 attendees. Alternatively, Anzac Peace Park will host a livestream of the service onto a large screen from 5am.
Tickets for the Dawn Service will be available via the National Anzac Centre website or Albany Visitor Centre, and tickets to attend the Albany Entertainment Centre livestream will be available from the Entertainment Centre from 9 April.
The National Anzac Centre website and Facebook page will also host the livestream. Visit www.nationalanzaccentre.com.au/anzac-day for more information.
