The City of Albany has been recognised for excellence in workplace safety and community support, receiving two significant awards that highlight its commitment to staff wellbeing and volunteerism.

The City was awarded the Local Government Insurance Scheme (LGIS) Diligence in Safety Award Tier 3 Silver Certificate: Achievement, recognising its strong commitment to workplace health and safety.

Achieving an overall score of 78 per cent, the certification reflects years of dedicated effort to embed safety practices across the organisation.

The award was presented at the March Ordinary Council Meeting, with LGIS Chief Executive Officer James Sherdian acknowledging the City’s focus on safety and broader business continuity.

City of Albany Chief Executive Officer Andrew Sharpe said the recognition was a testament to the collective effort of staff across the organisation.

“This achievement reflects the strong safety culture we have built over time, with staff at all levels committed to ensuring a safe and supportive workplace,” he said.

“We’re proud of the progress made over the past four years, and this award reinforces the importance of continuing to prioritise health and safety in everything we do.”

In addition, the City was honoured with the Volunteer Employer Recognition Award (VERA), presented by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services on Wednesday 25 March.

The award acknowledges the City’s ongoing support in enabling staff who volunteer with emergency services to respond to incidents when needed.

Mayor of Albany Greg Stocks said the award highlighted the City’s deep connection to community and emergency response efforts.

“Our volunteers play a vital role in keeping our community safe, and we’re incredibly proud to support staff who step forward in times of need,” he said.

“This recognition reflects our commitment to being a flexible and supportive employer, ensuring our volunteers can answer the call when it matters most.”

The City previously received the VERA award three years ago and is eligible for recognition every three years.

Together, these awards underscore the City of Albany’s dedication to fostering a safe workplace and supporting the broader community through meaningful action.
