Inclement weather hit Albany on Sunday afternoon and reached its peak on Monday evening when constant rain caused flooding and damage to Albany roads, requiring emergency services to step in.The City called on emergency service crews to work with local police, State Emergency Services and volunteer teams to control the impact the weather had on infrastructure and community safety.Emergency services worked across the evening responding to numerous call outs for fallen trees and flooding that required portions of Havoc Road and Lower Denmark Road to close for periods of time.Mayor of Albany Dennis Wellington showed his appreciation saying our emergency services teams are the backbone of a crisis like this.“When a natural crisis hits us whether it be bush fires, storms or flooding like we experienced last night, our emergency services are always there to help our community through it,” Mayor Wellington said.“They are selfless, resilient and passionate and their swift assistance last night helped hundreds of residents stay safe and wake up today with limited damage and destruction to face.“Today we thank our emergency services teams for their unwavering assistance to our residents last night and whole-heartedly support their efforts in giving back to the community.”City of Albany Chief Executive Officer Andrew Sharpe said the silver lining is in the relief this has brought farmers in the region.“Our Great Southern farmers have been fighting a battle of their own against the current drought crisis so this rain is certainly welcomed by this industry,” Mr Sharpe said.“We acknowledge all emergency services teams for their efforts in managing this weather front, are appreciative that our community are safe and are fortunate that our farming industry have enjoyed a long-awaited drink”.The clean-up from the weather front is ongoing and will continue over the next couple of weeks with wet weather forecast to continue across today and into the remainder of the week. The City encourage residents to proceed with caution as they travel around the Great Southern.
