First female Gunner to fire at Albany Heritage Park

Published on Monday, 20 April 2026 at 12:22:39 PM

A powerful moment in Albany’s history will unfold this month at Albany Heritage Park, as long-time volunteer Trish Forsyth becomes the first female gunner to undertake an official gun salute.

On Tuesday 21 April, Trish will take her place beside the historic artillery she has spent years watching from the sidelines; this time not as an observer, but as the one who brings it to life.

Her first firing forms part of the Albany Heritage Park’s 2026 commemorative ‘living heritage’ program, honouring Albany’s deep connection to the ANZAC story and the significance of the Princess Royal Fortress to Australia’s military history.

A dedicated volunteer since 2017, Trish has long been passionate about local history, particularly Albany’s role in the First World War.

Since joining as a volunteer in 2017, Trish has been driven by a deep respect for local history, particularly the stories of those who left Albany’s shores during the First World War.

Over the years, she has stood alongside the Princess Royal Fortress team, witnessing countless gun salutes, each one a moment of reflection, remembrance and impact.

Trish said being invited to undertake the firing as the first female gunner is both humbling and deeply meaningful.

“Witnessing a live gun salute is something that stays with people because it is such a powerful moment,” she said.

“We must not forget those people who gave up their todays for our tomorrows.”

Princess Royal Fortress Curator David Theodore said Trish’s participation shines a light on the vital role women have always played in times of war.

“Women contributed enormously to Australia’s military history. Not only by serving, but by sending their sons, fathers, partners and husbands off to war, often not knowing if they would return, while continuing to keep families and communities strong,” he said.

“It is an honour to watch Trish become Albany Heritage Park’s first female Gunner and here’s hoping she will not be the last.”

Gun salutes will take place at Albany Heritage Park at 10:30am and 1:30pm on Tuesday 21 April, and again on Thursday 23 April.

Community members and visitors are encouraged to attend and experience this powerful tribute to those who served.
